Telling tales out of school

Sir, – Tom Clonan, in his excellent article (“We need to tackle culture of whistleblower reprisal”, Opinion & Analysis, April 21st) writes that “ at every stage of our emotional, intellectual and ethical orientation, we are encouraged to do the right thing” .

While this is true, children also learn at the same time that telling tales is about the worst thing they can do. Primary school children who are being bullied often beg parents to say nothing and even parents of three- and four- year-olds in creches worry in case their child suffers as a result of a complaint.
