Sir, Let me positively reassure David Power (letters, November 21st) that the square piece of wall which he noticed at our archaeological dig site in Temple Bar was not part of the medieval city wall as he suggests, but the remains of a much later cellar. This was uncovered during site preparations for the public dig under way in Temple Bar, where the archaeologists are digging down to the Viking layer at about four metres below street level.
The reaction to this dig has been hugely enthusiastic with people from around Ireland, tourists and school groups visiting daily. In fact, as part of the information/education component of this unprecedented and innovative research excavation, we have arranged for archaeologists to be available daily to discuss progress and answer questions on the spot.
We have also published informative material, education packs, and excavation reports, most of which are available at the site. I welcome David Power's interest in the excavation, and would encourage more members of the public to visit the dig at Essex Street West, and witness archaeology in action. - Yours, etc.,
