Sir, - Geraldine Kennedy writes (The Irish Times, January 18th): "That [Fianna Fail] government availed of emergency powers to run beyond the five-year constitutional term." There is no five-year constitutional term.

Article 16 of the Constitution states: ". . .Dáil Éireann shall not continue for a longer period than seven years from the date of its first meeting; a shorter period may be fixed by law." - Is mise,
