Sir, Like countless others I watched, in a state of numbed shock, the images of horror and devastation that filled our TV screens over the past few days. It is unimaginable what those people trapped in the World Trade Centre on the floors above the impact area must have gone through to make some of them jump to their certain deaths.
This prompts an obvious question: Why, in such tall buildings, are parachutes not stored on upper floors as a mandatory piece of safety kit? I have not doubt this would have saved the lives of at least some of the people who jumped to their deaths. - Yours, etc.,
Mike Waldron, Dunboyne, Co Meath.
