Sir, - I am both surprised and pleased that Mr Blair has voiced his understanding of the concerns of the growing anti-war movement. His vision, if achieved, would help alleviate the effects of centuries of colonialism and inept foreign policy.

His words should now be followed quickly by firm deeds. Such actions should occur in parallel with any initiatives to bring those responsible for the September 11th bombings to justice. An immediate cancellation of Third World debt would be a good start.

Simply requesting that Israel sits down to talk with the Palestinians is not enough: a complete withdrawal from all Arab land occupied in the 1967 War will help turn Arab public opinion. A similar cessation of Anglo-American bombing raids on Iraq would further cement the global coalition against terrorism. - Yours, etc.,
