The abortion debate

Sir, – “How will I find a €1,000 in two weeks?” Dr Mary Favier (Opinion, February 25th)quotes from a woman seeking an abortion, and the quotation continues, “We have a Communion coming up and absolutely no money as it is”.  No irony noted here. What price a baby?

A doctor who has taken an oath to preserve life has no difficulty in supporting an abortion instead of offering life-giving assistance?  Much support is available, mainly from pro-life groups, for those with crisis pregnancies, so why is proper compassion not shown instead of a quick-fix solution that is anything but?

Dr Favier refers to the “complete absence of any of the voices of the more than 150,000 women who had abortions”. Having listened to one such voice last week explaining that women hurt by abortion are so traumatised that they find it difficult to speak out, it is sad that the doctor, with her support for abortion, is oblivious to this.   It is doing no service to women to offer abortion as a solution to an unwanted pregnancy and leave them devastated for the rest of their lives.

This is one decision that there is no going back on, and I believe that most women who opt for abortions do so in a state of panic, and would not take this course if  presented with a positive alternative.

Dr Favier does a great disservice to the vast majority of GPs who seek to preserve the lives of both the mother and the baby with the false claim that most of them are in favour of abortion.  It will be a sad day for Ireland, with its record on maternal care far above those countries with legalised abortion, if it is legalised here, leading to the ever increasing number of babies killed in the womb.

Let us hope and pray that this awful scenario does not come to pass. – Yours, etc,
