Madam, - So the bishops are worried about the moral values of our nation's children. I suppose we should be grateful that they have finally decided to protect the interests of children, considering their lamentable record on it in the past.
However, it is curious why they are so set against 16-year- olds having sex. On November 26th, The Nativity Story held its world premiere in the Vatican. This was the first time a film had its world premiere at the Vatican.
The funny thing is, the actress who portrays Mary is in real life, unmarried, pregnant and 16! Irish bishops are aghast at the proposal to decriminalise 16-year-olds having sex. Yet they have no problem with their Pope allowing a film to be shown in his home, starring an unmarried, pregnant 16-year-old as the mother of their God.
Why am I not surprised at yet another example of the moral hypocrisy of Irish bishops. - Yours, etc,
JASON FitzHARRIS, Swords, Co Dublin.
