Madam, - The Angel of the North is a modern steel sculpture which is 20 metres high and looks down on the A1 outside Gateshead, Tyne and Wear. It celebrated its 10th anniversary recently.
Completed at a cost of £800,000, the angel, created by Antony Gormley, is much loved by the people of the northeast of England and has been a beacon for a string of public projects that have transformed Gateshead, including the world's first tilting bridge, a Norman Foster concert centre, the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, plus dozens of works of public art scattered around the neighbourhood.
In addition it is an important symbol for the continuing economic regeneration of the area.
The Spire on O'Connell Street Dublin is 120 metres high and cost €4 million. It has now been with us for five years.
Where did we go wrong? - Yours, etc,
MARK LEADEN, College Park Close, Ballinteer, Dublin 16.
