Madam, - Might I add to your interesting obituary of Raymond Piper (July 21st) that the artist made at least one foray into the field of ecclesiastical art?
In 1956 he executed a beautiful reredos with a theme from the Book of Revelation for the then new Chapel of the Missions to Seamen in Belfast's Corporation Street.
Unfortunately the attractive mission with its chapel was later destroyed to make way for the Cross Harbour Bridge.
Piper publicly maintained that his reredos could have been re-erected in the Chapel of the New Mission at Pollock Dock.

To my great regret this was not done and this striking work of Piper's was lost in an act of public vandalism. - Yours, etc,
