Sir, - Some of your columnists and letter writers are getting bogged down in unnecessary detail in relation to the Bail Referendum. Look! This referendum is simply about restoring the balance in our criminal justice system.
On balance, it is wrong that the civil liberties of five thousand or more innocent victims of crime are denied by our current bail laws. On balance, it is right that a judge is given the discretion to refuse bail to habitual offenders or a criminal whom it is felt likely will commit another crime while on bail. Let's tilt the balance of justice in favour of the victim. - Yours, etc.,
Clarecastle, Co Clare.
