Sir, - As a 40-year-old who grew up in the south side of Dublin, one of my fondest memories is of the many days spent on the beach in Sandycove.

I find it very distressing now to see it taken over by a bunch of about 10 men and women who descend on the place every sunny day. The ghetto-blasters scream at full volume, copious cans of beer are piled up alongside them and the language is quite obscene, as are the remarks made about young girls trying to change on the beach. Any effort to politely ask them to lower the noise level is met with a belligerent glare and total disdain.

The guards arrive regularly - the ghetto blaster is turned down and the cans put under towels. The guards leave and total chaos resumes. Please can something not be done to preserve Sandycove as the haven it once was - for all of us to enjoy? - Yours, etc.,

Mary Quinn, Dun Laoghaire, Co Dublin.
