Sir, - Some three-quarters of a century ago, when faced with a choice between war and peace, Ireland's man of destiny, the great Michael Collins, chose peace - although bitterly opposed by the die-hard Eamon de Valera and his followers.

Now, when Northern Ireland's man of destiny, David Trimble, is faced with the same choice, he too chooses peace - although bitterly opposed by the die-hard Ian Paisley and his followers.

History has since judged Michael Collins to have been right, just as it will assuredly judge David Trimble to be right. So surely all die-hards should realise - as Germany's Adolf Hitler never did and Japan's Emperor Hirohito only belatedly did - that there ultimately comes a time for everyone to think the unthinkable and admit that enough is enough? - Yours, etc.
