Madam, - May I express my sincere gratitude to all the members of Galway County Council who were involved in the building of the new bridge in Leenane. They braved gales and torrential downpours and worked late into the evenings and weekend.
This morning it was almost ready to open - in just a week. The loss of the bridge has had a severe effect on local industry and inconvenienced the many of us who travel the N59 to work daily. A job well done! - Is mise,
ELIZABETH BIRDTHISTLE,
Leenane,
Co Galway.
Madam, - The collapse of the bridge Leenane meant that vehicles had to make a detour of up to 70 miles. Surely this event must awaken the Irish people to the direct effects and dangers of global warming. The flash flood and small landslide which resulted in the collapse of the bridge are unusual events in Ireland.
However, they can only become more frequent unless drastic changes are made. - Yours, etc,
PETER ENRIGHT,
Castlebar,
Co Mayo.
