Sir, - Please allow me to pose a question on the recent publicity regarding Roger Casement. While not a Casement "expert", I did read some books on him a few years ago and was struck by one overriding question, which has still not been addressed.
If Casement was so active homosexually, why did neither the Belgian authorities, nor the South American rubber barons, who were not known for their humanitarian probity, raise his sexual activities when his damning reports were published to such international acclaim?
Surely in such a rarefied atmosphere as a colonial outpost, one's sexual predilections would be whispered in even the most polite company. Am I the only one to wonder about this incongruity? - Yours, etc.,
