Sir, - On behalf of TYO1 (Transition Year Option) students of our college, we wish to state that we were shocked and appalled upon reading the article in The Irish Times (January 19th) about the attack on Ms Winnie O'Keefe in Co Cork.

W& are disgusted that this kind of violence is happening in our society, especially towards elderly people who are a vulnerable sector of our community.

This year, the theme of our project is Violence Against Women. Under the auspices - of Women's Aid, we have undergone consciousness raising in the whole area of violence. Until this, we were naive about the amount and extent of violence in society aimed especially at women. We have come to believe that not enough is being done to protect the vulnerable citizens of our society.

We call on all able bodied people to look but for the defenceless in our society. We are always being told to respect our elders and now we feel adults should do the same.

We wish Ms O'Keefe a speedy recovery and hope that in the future incidents like this will not happen and will not be accepted. - Yours, etc.,
