Sir, - the GAA President extolled the democratic nature of the vote last Saturday on the opening of Croke Park to other sports. A shambolic show of hands, a refusal to grant a recount? Does the GAA take its democratic principles from the Tammany Hall school of democratic politics, or that former great bastion of democracy, the Soviet Communist Party?
Against a background of third-world public services (I recently heard an overseas businessman describe Ireland as Africa with technology) in health, transport and infrastructure, is the plundering of the public purse to finance a major white elephant of the future (Stadium Ireland) or the activities of an anti-democratic and largely unaccountable organisation such as the GAA an appropriate way to spend taxpayers' money? - Yours, etc.,
Brian Murphy, Brennanstown Road, Dublin 18.
