Sir, - I heartily welcome the move by the Joint Committee on Broadcasting and Parliamentary Information to allow TG4 to broadcast Dβil ╔ireann's Order of Business each Wednesday and Thursday. Such a move helps bring our people closer to the parliament of which each citizen is a pivotal stakeholder, in theory at least. TG4's coverage confirms that theory, and serves as a guarantor for it.

TG4 should be commended for its continuing commitment to this principle, and this latest move builds on a consistent record of affording the Irish viewer coverage of some of the major parliamentary events of recent years, including the CTC Inquiry, the workings of the Public Accounts Committee and the investigation of the Abbeylara incident.

There is a consensus that the broadcasting of these events has helped in a small way to restore some confidence in the parliamentary process, and highlighted the value of the committee system to the wider public.

Those who use the British media for their information needs will be aware that there is a BBC digital channel dedicated to the workings of Westminster, including rolling coverage of proceedings as well as commentary from guest panels about prime minister's questions, etc.

I sincerely hope a similar version for Leinster House will be intrinsic to any plans by RT╔ for a digital service. While I realise there is no financial incentive for such a channel, there would be long-term socio-political benefits for the country which can not be gauged simply by accountants. - Yours, etc.,
