The daily grind

Sir, – Garry Bury (January 16th) resents importunate waiters offering to pepper his food from industrial-sized grinders.

Worse still, they arrive before you have had a chance to sample the food and judge the necessity for added condiments. I ask them to leave the grinder on the table. Some appear positively aggrieved to be deprived of their toy. – Yours, etc,

ANGELA POLSEN-EMY,

Dublin 6.

Sir, – I fully support Garry Bury in his irritation at the oversized pepper mills wielded by waiters. In addition, may I please express my irritation at the practice whereby, having taken each person’s order, the waiter insists on interrupting the conversation further and shouting the orders of the entire group to the table as a whole. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – These ridiculous first-world problems have now become a regular fixture in Irish public discourse. Please bring back proportionate outrage as variety is the spice of life after all. – Yours, etc,
