Sir, - The tragic death of Princess Diana is an event that transcends royalty and politics. Many could identify with her, regardless of her great wealth, in areas such as her marriage breakdown and subsequent divorce. Such a trauma was as real for her as it is for the ordinary citizen, and her sadness at that side of her life was apparent.

Her work for many charities was greatly to her credit. She did not have to embrace Aids patients, but she did, when many wouldn't for fear of damaging their own health.

Her work with the poor and the aged was not unlike that undertaken by our own President Robinson, something which Ireland may be proud of.
