The Eighth Amendment

Sir, – As someone who absolutely supports marriage equality and who was extremely proud to be Irish on Saturday, I am deeply disappointed that the Labour Party is now trying to use this victory for equality as a means to liberalise the laws on abortion in Ireland. This is clearly an attempt to suggest that all those who voted Yes on Friday would also support repeal of the Eight Amendment.

Supporting loving relationships with the protection of marriage is a very long way from supporting the ending of unborn life. – Yours, etc,

KATHLEEN FLYNN,

Sir, – The enthusiasm for equality was overwhelming over the weekend in the aftermath of the referendum vote on same-sex marriage. Then, before the weekend was over, the Labour Party was gearing up to have the Eight Amendment removed to allow greater access to abortion.

That amendment is one of the most explicit equality measures in the Constitution, guaranteeing equality between mother and unborn (but living) child. The support for equality hasn’t lasted long. – Yours, etc,

BRENDAN O’REGAN,
