The Eighth Amendment

Sir, – During my career as a medical practitioner, and a former independent Senator, I have had a special interest in women’s health. I have followed the recent hearings before the Oireachtas Committee on the Eighth Amendment with interest. The expert evidence by members of the medical profession made it clear how difficult it is for doctors to know when they may intervene to terminate a pregnancy when a woman’s life is at risk under the Eighth Amendment. The people need the opportunity to repeal the Eighth Amendment so that TDs and Senators can legislate in order to provide doctors with greater certainty and women with access to the reproductive healthcare that is so clearly needed. Any “replacement” text would carry the risk of creating further legal and medical uncertainty. – Yours, etc,
