An editorial in the Freeman's Journal responded: "Not withstanding all the prejudices incalculated and thrown out against this great undertaking, it is pretty certain that, in less than 10 years, there will not be a person in Dublin who will not wonder how anyone could have ever set face against so noble an improvement."
