Sir, - I'm not so sure that Edward Cowan (July 19th) can rest easy in his belief that theology is not his thing - not if a statement I once heard an eminent thinker make is to be believed. It ran: "Anyone who thinks is a theologian."
Sounds great! And if true (and who can safely contradict it?) what great fun we can all have, firing out our myriad questions and searching among the myriad answers for a glimpse of absolute truth. Great, serious fun - the essence of life!
Gerard Hughes puts it another way in his book God of Surprises: "There is also laughter, merriment and a lightness of touch when God is present." Amen to that. - Yours, etc.,
