Sir, - Tom McWalter (July 18th) rightly corrected the subject of Eamon Dunphy's legendary comment: it was Platini and not Maradona. However, he failed to correct the comment itself. Dunphy did not describe Platini as "a good player, but not a great player". He in fact made the far more linguistically challenged comment that Platini was "a great player, but not a great player". Thus, while Mr McWalter's letter has helped clarify one of the most famous episodes in sporting analysis it was, alas, a great letter, but not a great letter. - Yours, etc., Tim Carey,
