Sir, I write to express my appreciation of the article (April 3rd) by Mary Gallagher.

The decent Irish labourer in the England of the 1950s and 1960s was typically a countryman from west of the Shannon, working under dreadful conditions, living a life of quiet desperation, made bearable only by a certain rugged camaraderie with his mates and the satisfaction to be got, from the weekly cash subvention sent home uncomplainingly.

Rarely have I seen this important and much neglected aspect of the Irish diaspora described with such sensitivity and understanding as in Ms Gallagher's piece. - Yours, etc.,
