Sir, – On the rare – very rare indeed – occasion when this neophyte chess player actually solves one of JJ Walsh’s chess problems, which are celebrating their 40th anniversary in The Irish Times (Home News, August 30th), I immediately don my Walter Mitty persona and proceed to beat the legendary Bobby Fischer in the deciding game of our world chess championship encounter.

1, Fischer (White):f3; Me (Black):e 5. 2, Fischer: g4; Me: Qh 4 mate! (fool’s mate).

I look forward to the next 40 years of JJ Walsh’s chess column. – Yours, etc,
