The Kingdom for the king of birds

Sir, – Yet again we read about the great tradition that is Wren’s Day or Lá an Dreoilín (Home News, December 27th). However, it is with great disappointment that I see, yet again, the story and the pictures are taken in Sandymount, Dublin.

As a Dubliner living in west Kerry, I am familiar with the festival in Sandymount, but also with the tradition that exists, unchanged for generations throughout west Kerry.

The huge gathering in Dingle is a sight to behold. The colours, the music, the costumes are a spectacle.

I don’t wish to take away from the efforts of the organisers of the Sandymount festival. However, it does seem like a real pity to base your story in Dublin year after year, without a mention of Dingle. – Yours, etc,

DOROTHY BYRNE,
