Sir, – Cian Martin (August 11th) is concerned about some unknown moral code and its impact on the liberal agenda. There are many such codes from the Babylonian code of Hammurabi to the Mosaic law. The point is no society can exist without order and no order without regulation, whether legal or moral. In every civilisation some moral consensus is necessary to give stability to the social order. One may argue that moral codes may be too restrictive or too liberal but the reason they exist is based on the diversity of human nature and its aspirations, whether for good or bad, and the necessity to regulate these in the interest of the common good. – Yours, etc,
