Sir, - Could we please legislate to ban Christmas at least until December each year? The increasing commercialisation makes for a tawdry, tired and sad event by the time 25th December actually arrives.
If carols are piped into the supermarkets in October and decorations go up in early to mid-November, what is left to do come the day? Why bother to take the baubles and trees down at all; leave them up all year, they are mostly artificial anyway and so cannot shed.
Children cannot sustain the anticipation and I have begun to dread the whole thing. The magic we once enjoyed has gone for me but I hope not for ever for the next generation. - Yours, etc.,
Jan Wheeler, Dunshaughlin, Co Meath.
