Sir, - Sean Arnott (July 4th) suggested that there may be a bias shown by your paper towards Patricia McKenna and the other female MEPs representing Dublin, when he listed the coverage given to them compared with that of their male counterparts. Has he not considered that women MEPs perhaps get more coverage because they are more active than their male colleagues?

Outside Dublin, this country has only one female MEP - Nuala Ahern from Leinster. If it is true that the three Dublin women in the European Parliament - Patricia McKenna, Bernie Malone and Mary Banotti - are more active than their male colleagues, then it would be logical that a disproportionate amount of coverage is given to them.

I am all for gender balance, but I hope Mr Arnott will agree that good reporting should not be sacrificed for the sake of promoting men. - Yours, etc.,
