Madam, - Minister for Social Affairs Séamus Brennan believes that you are not living in consistent poverty unless you are unable to afford a winter coat and a second pair of shoes (The Irish Times, August 31st).

No doubt the Minister is unaware that you can purchase a good winter coat and a strong pair of winter shoes for €10 (less if you are unable to afford this). You just have to shop in Oxfam, St Vincent de Paul, Barnardos, or any of the other charity shops you will find in most towns in Ireland.

It is these charity shops which cater for the needs of those living in consistent poverty. - Yours, etc,
