The mighty pen

Sir, – John Horgan (An Irishman's Diary, November 1st) says that, when reporting from behind the lines on the Paisleyite blockage of Armagh in November 1968, he found himself conspicuous because he was "virtually the only person present who was not carrying some kind of makeshift instrument of mayhem".

But surely, as the excellent reporter that he was, he was carrying a pencil or pen on that occasion – both powerful instruments of mayhem? He knows better than most of us that the pen is mightier than the sword or cudgel, and long may he continue to brandish it.

– Yours, etc,

FELIX M LARKIN
