Sir, - There have seen so many letters lately to your newspaper criticising different aspects of Irish modern life. I feel I must write about one institution which merits the highest praise, namely, the Irish National Stud.
I visited it some weeks ago with an English friend, neither of us having been there for about 40 years. We were amazed at the changes and improvements. The grounds, which are immaculate, the stables, the foaling facilities, the saddlers and the beautifully fenced paddocks, not to mention the horses themselves, including our equine hero, Vintage Crop, who was looking a picture, were outstanding. What came over very strongly, was the sense of efficiency and dedication which was applied to everything. That's not to say these qualities were not always there, but they seemed to be intensified with a younger generation.
I would also like to praise the beautifully-kept gardens and reception area and shop. The staff everywhere were outstandingly friendly and informative. I would particularly like to mention our young guide who imparted every morsel of information with such charm and humour.
Altogether it was a most interesting and enjoyable day, and I would strongly advise everyone who can to visit it. Irish National Stud, take a bow! - Yours, etc.,
Joan A. Williams, Borris, Co Carlow.
