Sir, - The saga of the replacement for Nelson's Pillar continues unabated. The competition, whilst making demands and strictures on the participants, also required the assessors and jury to fulfil obligations as defined in the competition articles 6, 15 and 16. In brief, these relate to compatibility of scale to existing O'Connell Street architecture, a minimum of five finalists and the appointment of an arbitrator in the event of a dispute.
Whilst the competitors by and large appear to have complied with the substantial conditions, correspondingly the assessors and jury's conduct show no qualms about non-compliance with the above articles laid down by the competition. - Yours, etc.,
H. James Dalton, Shanganagh Road, Killiney, Co Dublin.
