Sir, - In reference to Mr G. T. Dempsey's letter (July 30th) concerning the antics of the Irish media, I wonder, or maybe more appropriately assume, that he is out of touch with exactly what went on regarding the American media vs Michelle Smith. I determined, upon reading his letter, that he felt he spoke for all Americans living in Ireland. References such as "for those of us Americans" led me to such a belief.
A small point of note, then, to Mr Dempsey would be the response that Americans gave to the disgraceful scenario regarding the accusations concerning possible "steroid abuse" by Michelle. I refer him to the Letters to the Editor page on July 26th, in which two Americans criticised openly the American media circus surrounding the performances of Michelle in Atlanta. Mr Dempsey may also take note that the letters were addressed, one from Virginia and one from Celbridge, Co Kildare.
Furthermore, he refers to a "naturally distraught" Janet Evans behaving impeccably at the post race press conference by gingerly mentioning Michelle in connection with substance abuse. Yes, she had just failed to reach the final she had previously won, which is exactly why her outburst was completely merited and well worthy of gold for the "remarkable showing of sour grapes" award. If Janet was so "distraught", does that explain her remarks about a swimmer who hadn't even swam in the same heat as her? Yours, etc.,
Lucan,
Co Dublin.
