THE POINT OF THE PROMS

Sir, - Lindsay Armstrong (May 29th) misses the point of the Bank of Ireland/RTE Proms by a very wide margin

Sir, - Lindsay Armstrong (May 29th) misses the point of the Bank of Ireland/RTE Proms by a very wide margin. The whole idea of the Proms is to give audiences the opportunity to enjoy music in all its varieties in a relaxed, informal and, above all, different atmosphere to that which they normally have.

While many performers would agree that the RDS is not ideal, we would be more than happy to see the tent resurrected, and get back to the original format of the Proms, where the environment is even less to the liking of Messrs Armstrong and Dervan.

Those members of the concert going public who desire a more formal setting for orchestral concerts have the NCH available to them for 51 weeks of the year, so while the rest of us get on with having fun at the Proms, may I suggest they close their eyes and ears for a week and take a short holiday!
