A chara, - It is surprising to see an historian of John A. Murphy's experience misrepresenting opposition to partition and rule by a foreign country such as Britain as "virulent anglophobia" (August 31st).

The whole idea of a struggle to remove foreign rule is so that normal relations can be established between states or nations. Sinn Fein is not anglophobic.

Does John A. Murphy denounce the leaders of 1916, Michael Collins, et al, as "virulent anglophobes"?

I suppose that, in John A. Murphy's book, the people of India, Kenya, Aden and Cyprus were all "anglophobes". Or is that just a peculiar national trait of us Irish? - Is mise,
