Sir, - Crossing Capel Street bridge recently, on a lovely summer afternoon, I witnessed extreme hostility vented towards two black people. They were subjected to a barrage of shouting and racial, verbal abuse from an Irishman - something I had never experienced before in Dublin. I felt shame.

I would say the root causes of racism in our society are our insularity and a major lacuna in our educational system. Human rights should be given greater emphasis in education and taught in our schools, so we can develop as a more tolerant, pluralist and inclusive society. - Yours, etc.,
