Madam, - In light of the fact that Folens is withdrawing all references to the British Isles from its school atlas, will it also be renaming the Irish Sea the "Irish and British Sea"? - Yours, etc,

Madam, - Your news item concerning decision by Folens to omit the term "British Isles" from its school atlas leads me to make the following comments.

As part of the entry under the word oileán, an island, Dinneen's Irish-English Dictionary gives, as an example of its use, Oileáin Iarthair Eorpa, the British or West European Isles. Perhaps the term "West European Isles" should be given official status as a replacement term for "British Isles"?

It would seem preferable to the suggested "Islands of the North Atlantic", which would be more appropriate if it were intended to include Iceland. - Yours, etc,
