Sir, - The politicians have no useful role to play in this campaign and would be well advised, therefore, to keep their comments about the merits or demerits of the candidates to themselves.

Mr Spring's comments about Professor McAleese were mean and unfair. Mr De Rossa's remarks about Dana trying "to reinvent herself" were contemptible.

Politicians, leave the campaign to the five candidates; let them fight their own battles, and let them, on their own, put their cases to the electorate. - Yours, etc.,
