The Presidential Election

Sir, - I have been wrong about Adi Roche. From the start I had been ambivalent about her. Then, after the hiatus of her ex-colleagues outburst, I had decided she was not to be supported. However, having seen with what composure and dignity she responded to that onslaught, and, more recently, having seen her on television with Mary Banotti, I have changed my mind. Beside her, Ms Banotti looked and comported herself like an old pro (politician), and lacking any touch of charisma or grace.

The other candidates are equally lacking in presence. And, to boot, Adi Roche is the only one of the five who has had the generosity and concern to put her money where her mouth is, pledging part of her presidential salary to helping children. A touch of Jim Kemmy, God rest him.

I will most certainly be voting for her. The presidency is about more than legal, or political, or whatever expertise. It is primarily about presenting a good image; it is about style, charisma, dignity and grace under pressure. And, Adi Roche has all of those qualities, that touch of class. I would be proud to have her as my President. - Yours, etc., Bill Long,
