Sir, – I note that the standard letter postage rate will increase to 70 cent from July 1 st.
Twelve months ago the rate was 60 cent. This represents a near 17 per cent increase in a year when inflation was effectively zero.
Since the introduction of the euro in 2002 when the standard letter rate was 38 cent, the rate will have risen 84 per cent over a period when inflation totalled 25 per cent.
An Post will argue that their rates must reflect their universal service obligation and point to European average rates but I wonder could any other business in Ireland operate with such disregard for their customers which the level of these increases demonstrates? – Yours, etc,
