Sir, – Although I would concur with many of Gillian Fallon's points (April 21st), which to a certain extent outline the history of water services in Ireland, I do condemn the manner in which the Government has established this Irish Water quango. For that is what it is. In what other country in the world would a spokesperson for any company glibly state that 700,000 "incorrect" bills will be sent out in the first quarter? Postage costs alone for these letters amount to €476,000. Unfortunately, persisting in a metering project at a cost of €539 million can be tagged as yet another example of the waste of our resources. People are not fools. It is not always the extra charge which people have a difficulty with, but the way in which our money has been wasted by the same group that failed utterly in its responsibility to upgrade the system over many years. – Yours, etc,
CAITRIONA LAWLOR,
