Sir, – Rev Terry Lilburn (June 2nd) is enamoured by what he regards as the "extraordinary good value" of "just" €64.10 a quarter for water. He then helpfully goes on to break the charge down even further telling us that it represents just 0.35 cents a day – all of which prompts the question, why not go the whole hog and break it down to an hourly rate which would amount to a mere 0.015 cent. Wow, what value – until that is, one realises that we are already paying for the service and the "very small amount" is in fact a double payment.
And another obvious problem with all this mathematical gymnastics is that there are thousands of households across the country in which €64.10 represents a small fortune right now. Has the good reverend really not met any of them? – Yours, etc,
JIM O’SULLIVAN,
Rathedmond,
Sligo.
