A chara, – The leaking of a legal opinion commissioned by Irish Water is yet another indication of how desperate the company is and of how little it thinks of the collective intelligence of the public ("Water charges irreversible in EU law, say lawyers", March 29th).
The previous leak attempted to paint Irish Water as “too big to fail”; the figures presented in that report have been widely discredited. So having failed to convince people that it would be too expensive to do away with Irish Water, a new leak suggests it may not be legally possible to abolish the company.
While pathetic stunts like this will no doubt be seized upon by certain parties to support their own political agenda, they also point to a level of fear and desperation within Irish Water that its days are numbered. Perhaps the leak was aimed at Fianna Fáil, given that party’s stance on the issue during the election. However, having only just started to regain the trust of the electorate, I’m sure the leadership of Fianna Fáil is fully aware of the decimation that awaits them at the next election should they set about breaking their promises on Irish Water. – Is mise,
