The Rio Olympics

Sir, – Am I alone in finding this year’s Olympics less than inspiring? Already fatigued by the European Cup, the golf majors and the tennis, I found it hard to conjure up enthusiasm for the Olympics. It hasn’t helped that drug-taking athletes have been suspended, ticket touts have been active, the water in the swimming pools turned green from algae, sewage was visible in the canoeing and sailing waters, crime was rife in the streets of Rio, and poor sportsmanship was evident all round, including a losing soccer team calling its opponents cowards. The Olympics will not survive unless a major overhaul is carried out. – Yours, etc,

AOIFE LORD,

Tankardstown, Co Meath.
