DENIS L. O'GRADY,
Sir, - A high-level expert advisory group to the UK government produced a report in 1999 rejecting any automatic link between motorways and increased employment.
The fallacy that motorways always equal more jobs needs to be swept away and replaced with improved decision-making based on real world economics. The new mindset should be based on getting value for taxpayers' money.
There is great pressure currently to ensure that policy-makers base their decisions on the application of sound science on issues from food safety to GMOs.
It is, therefore, somewhat ironic that those responsible for the current system of transport infrastructure financing seem so unwilling to listen to the academics on this particular issue. - Yours, etc.,
Denis L. O'Grady, Moyle Big, Carlow.
