Sir, - For want of a better word, Gerry Thornley (Sports, May 27th) called Neil Back's win-at-all-costs philosophy "professionalism". It is anything but.

A member of a profession is bound by the principle that the interests of the client or patient take precedence at all times over the practitioner's own.

When applied as a metaphor to sport, the word "professionalism" must mean that one obeys the letter and spirit of the rules, even when this benefits the opposing team. The word Gerry Thornley was reaching for is "unprofessionalism". - Yours, etc.,
