Madam, - The utter bankruptcy of Scottish soccer was laid bare on Sunday for all to see.
Rangers and Celtic had to play their last games of the season not only to win but to do so by a glut of goals, having to outscore each other. The results of each of these matches (surely a contradiction in terms) was never in doubt. Neither was the fact that handfuls of goals would be scored against such inept teams that to even call them opposition does a gross injustice to the very word.
It was also embarrassing to witness the match in my local pub surrounded by fans baying for a Celtic victory, with their accompanying anti-Rangers bigoted language, while all wearing replica football shirts from the English Premiership. Surely another contradiction?
The clamour in Scotland and in some quarters of the English FA for Celtic and Rangers to be allowed into the Premiership will surely grow from this sorry excuse for a football league. Though such a move is some years away, it will unfortunately leave the SPL on a par with the Eircom League in terms of skill, excitement and in some cases finance and attendance. - Yours, etc.,
D. ROSS, Walkinstown, Dublin 12.
