Sir, - Contrary to Eilish Sheridan's assertion, I believe our Taoiseach is indeed providing a lead in upholding the values of this nation. While I deem myself lucky to be part of a "traditional" family, Celia Larkin, as Bertie Ahern's partner, represents a significant and growing number of similarly structured relationships in the new, pluralist Ireland. - Yours, etc.,

Stay-at-home mothers
Sir, - I wholeheartedly agree with Finola Bruton's comments about stay-at-home mothers (The Irish Times, December 14th). After the last two budgets, there is now insidious and reinforced discrimination against our families.
We are making many sacrifices to stay at home and rear our own children. Rather than being supported, we are being penalised financially. Choice is not being respected. We are indeed being forced out of existence and "treated as pariahs".
Whither Irish society? Are we to disregard our traditions of caring, tolerance and Christianity - and our Constitution, which enshrines protection of the family? - Yours, etc.,
Eileen McGovern, Foxrock, Co Dublin.
